SMART LUXURY: What is it and why we use it?
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a luxury interior design firm? It’s easy to walk into a beautiful home and see and feel the product of great design, but what actually happens in the creation process? The short answer is, it’s the appropriate combination of materials applied by quality craftsmen that maintain a level of quality and design integrity while creating the design aesthetic originally envisioned by the designer. The long answer is, it is thousands of pieces of information assimilated into a single space. The designer is responsible for organizing and managing all of those pieces of information while always working with the client’s best interest in mind.
This process can be somewhat overwhelming and, no matter how many times someone has gone through it, each project is different. I have found through the years that clients don’t create unreasonable expectations; they just don’t always know what is realistic. Think about it from the client’s perspective. They are in the process of a life changing experience and are excited and nervous and anxious. Who wouldn’t want everything now?! It is the designer’s job to educate them as to what is about to happen, how long it will take and what they can expect to see at each step along the way.
At IMI we have developed a program to bring the massiveness of a design project into perspective. We call it our Smart LuxuryTM Program. Smart LuxuryTM breaks each project into six phases that bring various aspects into focus with clear deliverables for the team. In this way, the clients know what to expect and how long it should take. This is IMI’s trademarked method for ensuring everyone is on the same page at all times. Over the next few weeks we will be exploring each of these phases in detail. Our goal throughout this discussion is to share this information with future clients and team members. We feel the education process in any design project is vital and over the next few weeks we will be elaborating on this proprietary system developed specifically for IMI’s luxury clients. We will walk through each phase and detail what is going on behind the scenes, what the clients can expect to see and what the responsibilities of the project team members are.
