PRIMITIVE INSTINCE MEETS MODERN LUXURY: A Luxurious Firepit
One of our most primal instincts is to gather around fire. First place for the 2013 Design Excellence Award for Furniture recognizes the modern and luxurious manner in which this primitive urge can be honored.
For our clients who love to entertain in an environment that is often times quite cold we needed to create a piece that both services guests and keeps them warm. The design that we developed mimics their custom dining table as two 90° planes of copper and steel mirror each other allowing the negative space to sculpt the linear form. That center plane of limestone and river rock houses a sliver of flame protected by glass blades. The metal, stone and glass nod to the materials used structurally in the home to compliment the architecture. The table itself allows for a glass of wine or hot chocolate to sit easily on the steel top while enjoying the warmth of the flame. The design also includes a gas valve mechanism for direct line hookups within the piece’s base.
While this design itself is a nod to the architecture of the home, it was only achieved through the participation of our wonderful partners. Gary Slater and his team at Slater Sculpture here in Phoenix worked diligently to bring our vision to life. This piece embodies multiple aspects of a luxury item. It is designed as a one-of-a-kind piece that works perfectly with the environment in which it is located. It was fabricated by a true craftsman who took the time and attention to perfect every aspect of the piece. And, perhaps most of all, it embodies the intangible essence of the comfort of good friends gathered around a fire on a cold winter’s evening. What could be more luxurious than that?
