ONE OF A KIND: Handmade Luxury
“That’s mine. It was made just for me. And it’s the only one that exists.” Who doesn’t love being able to say that? We currently live in an age of mass production where want to be able to go to the store and purchase something that is exactly the same as the one our friend has. In some regards this isn’t a bad thing. There is a level of quality that we can expect from larger companies. The systems that make items readily available are also the systems that maintain prices at a reasonable level.
But then there are those moments when we want something that is just for us, something no one else has…or at least not very many people. It can be a rare piece of jewelry, a handmade sculpture or a limited edition piece of furniture. The possibilities are endless. The idea is simple; we feel special when we have some that is special. When talking about handmade items, works of true craftsmanship, there is also a heightened sense of quality and care that was required to create it. It isn’t depending on the mass marketing production systems but has the actual time and skill of a craftsman performing his labor of love and then passing that little bit of himself on to you.
Sometimes these one of a kind items aren’t just found. You have to have them made. That process brings with it an entirely new experience. How luxurious it feels to be able to be part of the process of creating something that is unique in this world. It also harkens back to a time when the affluent and wealthy were the patrons of the arts allowing those with the talent to produce their masterpieces. In this day and age where the skills of the craftsmen and artisans are being overwhelmed by the standardization of mass production, the ability to act as a patron—even for just one piece—is a privilege.
