THE JEWEL BOX OF THE HOME: An Award Winning Powder Room

Posted September 5, 2013 by & filed under

Powder rooms are the jewel box in a home. They should be a wonderful treat for guests to a visual and sensual experience while playing to the architectural and design philosophy of the home. It was with this in mind that we developed the concept for what became the 2013 ASID Design Excellence 1st Place Bathroom Design Award. This complete remodel updated a 20 year old home to a modern mountain architectural style. The home incorporates natural materials including grey limestone, Brazillian cherry wood, steel, wenge and zebrano woods and warm copper for the interior finishes. We wanted to make sure that his powder room did justice to the overall design while giving just a little extra something to the guests.

That something extra comes in the form of a side mounted water fixture waterfalling into a gray limestone trough. The graphic pattern of the travertine, limestone and glass contrast with the simplistic forms of vertical and horizontal masses of limestone. A slim lined wood trimmed floor-to-ceiling mirror finishes the composition. The remaining walls combine a horizontal steel reveal and grass cloth walls to continue the interest of the space. The lighting in the space is a combination of recessed and low voltage directional cable lights.

This just goes to show that even small spaces can pack a powerful impact when it comes to design. It’s all about creating mood and sensational experiences at each opportunity.
