The Importance of Trade Shows
The Milan Furniture Show is coming up! It is one of, if not the largest furniture exhibition in the world. It’s held annually in Milan and is a place for new designs, new styles, new manufacturers and anything else related to furniture to be seen. The event lasts a week and is estimated to have over 300,000 attendees. Wow. That’s a lot of people looking at furniture.
The question becomes “Why is this show so important?” The bigger question is why are trade shows in general important. In an industry where everything is influenced by materials available from a certain location or a technique recently developed by a pioneering engineer in a workshop somewhere there is no way for a designer to stay on top of the most recent new options on their own. These design shows bring all the vendors and manufacturers together in one spot to show off their new offerings to a huge audience for maximum impact. By that same token, designers are able to see many new vendors or new products in just a few days.
It is at these trade shows that the upcoming trends can be seen and allows the designers to ensure their work stays current and relevant in an ever changing industry. Sometimes the items found at these shows are perfect for projects we’re currently working on, sometimes they just stick in the back of your mind waiting for that perfect spot to be put to use. Either way, without these shows, designers would get bogged into a repetitive cycle of sourcing the same products from the same vendors. This type of event is a breath of fresh air and should be attended by anyone who has the chance.
