Design Work At Home and Abroad
April 2013 at IMI Design
Greetings! I just returned from Italy where I had the honor of participating in the Milan Furniture Fair. I came back inspired and energized about the progress on my own custom furniture line. This is a great time to be a client with the new inspiration and ideas from this spectacular trip. Meantime, back at the office new projects are keeping our team quite busy in both Arizona and California! And the Inspire Design Foundation project for this year is about to kick into high gear. Needless to say, we are looking forward to another great and busy quarter at our studio. We are truly fortunate to have clients and trade partners who allow us the chance to express our passion for uplifting design in each and every project. Below are just a few of the things going on at the moment. Thank you for the opportunity to share our updates with you!
The Inspire Design Foundation
Needs Your Help!
|The Inspire Design Foundation has moved into Phase 2 of the 2013 program featuring the Foundation for Blind Children as our beneficiary. We’ve had a tremendous response and are so grateful to everyone who shares our excitement and passion for this project.
Design plans are currently being drafted to transform the Foundation for Blind Children’s East Valley Campus and bring much needed improvements that will make the classrooms and common areas better for the children and the teachers. The Foundation for Blind Children provides resources and assistance to anyone with vision loss. Please visit the Foundation online to learn more.
The winning design will be unveiled on May 15th – so stayed tuned!
But we need your help to make this dream a reality. While we received generous commitments from our vendors for supplies, materials and services, we still are in great need of financial support to cover items that go beyond materials and services.
Sponsorship packages are available. For more information and to learn how you can help, please call Luke Payne at IMI Design Studio at: 480.837.8979 or email him at Luke@IMIDesignStudio.com
We thank you in advance for the support!
Reflections from Milan Furniture Fair ,
Update on Anita Lang Signature Furniture Line
|Participating in the Milan Furniture Fair this year was inspiring and stimulating! As the biggest event in the design industry, the magnitude of talent that it attracted from all over the globe was spectacular.
In Anita’s words: “It was such a pleasure to be among the thousands of designers, buyers and journalists inside the massive Fiera Milano trade hall. I was inspired by how vibrant and thriving the design industry is on a global scale.”
Throughout the week hundreds of designers showcased thousands of products for every sector of the homeware market – utilitarian, sustainable, high-end luxury and even purely conceptual pieces.
This is where trends are born and new brands get their start.
Among this year’s big themes were warm metals such as German Bronze showcased in lights by designer Sebastian Herkner and even in a desk by Tuscan sculptor Giacomo Ravagli for the Italian Nilufar Gallery. Also products made from sustainable materials such as coconut-fiber table by British designer Jake Phipps, bamboo lights by the Campana Brothers for Baccarat, and banana-tree fiber coiffeuse by Armani Casa.
It was very special to be researching and learning from these great companies to incorporate some of their best practices into the Anita Lang Signature furniture collection.
Maximizing her time in Europe, Anita Lang also toured the Kettal furniture factory in Spain and met with the owner. In her words: “Passion for what they do is seen throughout the staff members and in every part of the facilities. The owner, Alex, took time to personally meet with me and I was very impressed with his visionary leadership and determination to be on the cutting edge of furniture design. His commitment to design integrity is seen in his selective partnerships with outstanding designers.”
On behalf of our entire team, we’d like to sincerely thank our friends at Kettal, including Carlos Alfaro for their hospitality.

In other news…
|On April 4th, we were featured in the Arizona Republic in a profile story on our business. In case you missed it, you can still access the article online by clicking here.
If you are flying a private jetliner anytime soon, take time to read the recent issue of JetSet Magazine. We are continuing our participation and you’ll see our studio featured in article topics ranging from projects to design philosophy.
We’d also like to thank our talented friends at CK Valenti for featuring us in their last newsletter! We are grateful for our ongoing partnership!
One of our recently completed projects was a spectacular kitchen remodel. The design goal in this kitchen and bar was to update the bland typicality of the space and to create function for a serious cook. The designer’s philosophy was to play to the architectural principal of massing in the kitchen’s layout while creating interest by juxtaposing materials of sleek, white lacquer, rich, warm ribboned sapele and masculine grey limestone.
The first step was reallocating the space planning and incorporating the dinette seating with the kitchen island. The existing rounded dinette was then given a new purpose for this couple that loves to entertain: a full service bar. Good lighting was a high importance request. The solution was to offset tracts of directional low voltage lights. LED lighting along with a painted sheet ceiling creates interest while defining the space. Linear Fine Woodworking created the incredible cabinetry. We are always grateful to have such talented partners and vendors to work with!
